Personal Profile
I grew up in Toronto, ON Canada. Growing up with family ties in Bermuda, where I learned to scuba dive, I have always loved being by the ocean. I completed my undergraduate studies in molecular biology at McMaster University, during which I conducted research on sea urchin larval development for my thesis. I then worked as a cephalopod aquarist in Woods Hole MA, where I cultured and conducted research on cuttlefish, squid, and octopuses. I will be participating in a remote internship with the Barsi lab on Differential Gene Expression Analysis in Sea Urchins as a part of the CABIOS (Canadian Associates of BIOS) program, before starting my Master's in Marine Biology, September 2021 at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

THE ANALYSIS
How are we answering the question?
What genes are differentially expressed in the gut of purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) larvae? How might these genes act in combination to contribute to the gut phenotype?
Expression levels of over 20,000 genes (measured in number of sequencing reads per gene) from RNA sequencing of sea urchin larvae in two tissues: 1) the gut tissue, and 2) all other tissues, at 30 hours post-fertilisation.
Identify and classify the genes whose expression is higher (upregulated) or lower (downregulated) in the compared to all other tissues and investigate potential mechanisms in which these genes may interact to contribute to the gut phenotype.
